چکیده

The ratio of CH4/CO in comets is an important indicator of the region of their formation. However, it is diicult to measure the quantity of CH4. The Giotto Ion Mass Spectrometer experiment observed a quantity of CH + which seemed inconsistent with the amount of CH4 observed. Thus, it was proposed that a source of the CH + was a distributed source in the dust. We tested this hypothesis by observing the CH emission strength in comet Hale-Bopp as a function of dustiness. We see no strong correlation between the dust and the gas. Thus, for Hale-Bopp, dust is unlikely to be a dominant source of CH.

The Distribution, Excitation, and Formation of Cometary Molecules: Methanol, Methyl Cyanide, and Ethylene Glycol

We present an interferometric and single-dish study of small organic species towardComets C/1995O1 (Hale-Bopp) and C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) using the BIMA interferometer at 3 mm and the ARO 12m telescope at 2 mm. For Comet Hale-Bopp, both the single-dish and interferometer observations of CH3OH indicate an excitation temperature of 105 5 K and an average production rate ratio Q(CH3OH)/Q(H2O) 1:3% at ...

Evidence for Chemical Heterogeneity in the Nucleus of C/1995 O1 (hale–bopp)

We present an analysis of OH, CN, and C2 jets observed in the coma of Comet Hale– Bopp on UT April 22, 23, and 25, 1997. Monte Carlo models designed to simulate the gas jets were employed to analyze the nuclear active areas responsible for the observed coma gas jets. Our results indicate that four active areas are necessary to reproduce the CN and C2 jets while five active areas are required to...

Observations of carbon monoxide in comet Hale-Bopp.

The recently discovered comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 01) sports a bright dust coma even though it is still far from the sun (presently 6 astronomical units). This feature has attracted considerable interest in the public and scientific arenas. The comet is headed toward perihelion at 0.92 astronomical unit in April 1997 and is widely expected to then become a spectacular naked-eye comet. With millim...

Hnc and Hcn in Comets

We use a multifluid hydrodynamical-chemical model of cometary comae to predict the HNC and HCN abundances in comets Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp for a variety of initial parameters. We find, in general, that the presence of methanol in the nuclear ices inhibits the synthesis of HNC from HCN through proton transfer reactions in the coma. For Hale-Bopp, we find that because of the large gas production...

Are there a“Hale” and a“Bopp” in comet Hale-Bopp?

Comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp was observed with the adaptive optics system adonis on the ESO 3.6 m telescope at La Silla, Chile, through the broadband J, H, K, SK (Short K) filters on 6 November 1997 and 15 January 1998. After processing of the images using different restoration techniques, the maximum brightness in the coma appeared as a double peak. The separation between the two components was 0...
